Hollywood shows partisanship in 'Anchorman'

Will Ferrell comedy takes cheap shot at President Bush at end of film

- July 17, 2004 -

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, an adult comedy movie, stars SNL-alum Will Ferrell. In the film, actor Steven Carell plays a nitwitted and scatterbrained TV weatherman named Brick Tamland who works on a sophomoric news team, the same as Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell's character). Throughout the film the Tamland character acts imbecilic, blockheaded, and moronic.

During the closing credits of the film, in a montage outlining "what happened to" the movie's characters, a narrator announces, "Brick Tamland retired from the news in the 1990's. He is now a top advisor to the Bush Administration."

Why is this cheap shot in the movie when nearly half of the potential audience likes President Bush? It's not hard to imagine some viewers souring to the film over the quip, although the movie delivered a decent number of laughs up until this.

Anchorman was written by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. It was produced by Judd Apatow. The film is a product DreamWorks SKG, the media company of Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. Any guesses on whom these guys will be voting for in the coming election?
