Is the Media Downplaying "Morning-After Pill" Troubles?

Mass media trumpets Merck's Vioxx dangers. But what about mifepristone?

- November 18, 2004 -

RU-486 is also known as mifepristone and Mifeprex. However, it is best known as the "morning-after pill." It is designed to induce an abortion and terminate a pregnancy up to 49 days (7 weeks). The drug, marketed by Danco Laboratories, has been linked to three deaths since it went on the market in 2000. There have also been 676 adverse events reported by women who have used the drug.

This past week, the FDA toughened the warning label on Mifeprex,. It now carries a "'strengthened' black-box warning," citing the risk of fatal bacterial infections, septic shock, and heavy bleeding.

Yet, considering the fact that 360,000 women have reportedly taken the drug, is this story getting the media attention it deserves?

Last week (11/14/04), 60 Minutes did a high-profile report on the dangers of Vioxx, a pain medication sold by Merck & Co., Inc. The issue has also received substantial news coverage.

But where are the news reports and "news magazine" reports on the dangers of RU-486?

TheMediaReport.com asks ... Is the media's pro-abortion slant affecting its duty to inform the public?
